Cognition

Cognitive-communication difficulties can result from stroke, traumatic brain injury, concussion, ADHD, brain fog, or progressive neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia. These challenges can affect memory, attention, problem-solving, organization, and the ability to communicate effectively in daily life.

Signs to look for may include:

  • Forgetting important information or tasks

  • Difficulty focusing, planning, or organizing

  • Trouble following conversations or instructions

  • Slower thinking or processing information

  • Difficulty multitasking or completing everyday activities

Evaluation includes both standardized and informal assessments to identify areas of strength and challenge. Therapy focuses on restorative strategies to improve cognitive skills and compensatory strategies to support daily functioning. Interventions are individualized, evidence-based, and designed to address the specific needs and goals of each client.

Our clinician is actively pursuing Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) credentialing, ensuring advanced expertise in supporting individuals with cognitive and communication challenges following brain injury. Therapy is tailored to improve independence, participation, and quality of life across home, work, and community settings.

Swallowing

Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) can result from traumatic or non-traumatic brain injury, neurodevelopmental conditions, age-related changes, or progressive neurological diseases. Difficulties with swallowing can affect nutrition, hydration, safety, and overall quality of life.

  • Frequent throat clearing

Therapy may include Expiratory Muscle Strength Training (EMST), tongue-strengthening using a tonguometer/IOPI, and individualized strategies to improve safety and efficiency. Robust patient and family educationis a core component of care, empowering individuals to make informed decisions and confidently manage swallowing needs across daily settings.
